Will your homeowners insurance cover winter weather damage? [Video]

As temperatures drop and snow begins to fall this winter, homeowners have a host of new risks. Let’s take a look at some common winter weather hazards that most standard homeowners policies protect against.

If your pipes burst or ice dams form on your roof from the freezing conditions, your homeowners insurance may cover the damages. However, you must be able to prove you took steps to prevent the damage in order to be eligible, so remember to properly maintain your pipes, drains and gutters.

Your homeowners policy may also cover damage from falling trees or branches caused by ice or snow, as well as the cost of removing the tree. In addition, you could be protected if your roof collapses under the weight of heavy snow.
